Research and Planning Provisional Marks
Well done so far Chris. I would like to see more evidence of your time management and of dates and times of production. A storyboard animatic using your original materials would show exceptional skills in your use of ICT in the planning stage and include shots your have taken for the poster and magazine productions - what are their strengths and weaknesses? Add some extra comments to recent posts and spend some time looking over your research posts - there may be more room for analysis of the following: mise en scene, camera, editing, sound, location, target audience, unique selling points, branding, narrative, representation, genre indicators, ket moments. Show me that you are an expert when it comes to your genre! 15/20
Script
Scene 1
(No dialogue, different shots of Will walking around the airfield, with muddled shots of the world before the disaster)
Scene 2
(Will is aiming at Chris through a sniper scope as he sits
on a chair outside, listening to his 4 henchman talk, the audio is muted from
Will’s point of view)
(The shot goes closer to the group and the conversation can
be heard)
Muhammad : look all
I’m saying is that if we went back we could have found where that noise was
coming from
Henchman 2: what does it even matter? It was probably a dog
or something
Muhammad: it didn’t sound like a dog
Henchman 3: it could have been a survivor?
Muhammad: That’s what I’m saying, we should have gone back
Henchman 4: what do you think boss?
(Henchman 4 moves in front of Chris just as Will takes the
shot, Henchman 4 is killed and Chris jumps up and starts shooting)
(A small gunfight ensues between Chris, the 3 remaining
henchman and Will where one is killed and another disappears, the shot goes back to Will as a gun is cocked
behind his head)
Scene 3
(Muhammad drags a semi-conscious Will past Chris, Chris follows
behind, Muhammad kicks Will’s leg out so he is kneeling on the floor)
Chris: So, why did you do it?
Will: I was just trying to protect myself
(Chris punches Will in the face, causing him to fall to the
floor)
Chris: didn’t protect yourself so well there, did you?
(Both Muhammad and Chris start to kick Will on the floor,
Chris pulls his gun out and presses it to Will’s head, keeps it there for a
brief moment, then re- holsters it, laughing. Chris gestures at Muhammad and
the two walk away)

Poster Ideas
This poster fromthe film Cloverfield has some of the same things that we would like to include in our film poster. We would like a scenic shot behind the main character, with the character in the foreground. This type of image for the poster would be good as it shows the main aspect of the film, which is the cinematic sceneic shots of the landscape in the film. This type of image would be able to allow the audience to idnetify the genre of the film and what the story could possibly be about, this would help to attract the audience. This effect is well used within the genre, this is because it outlines the loneliness of the character, making them miniscule in comparison to the background. As most of the backgrounds within the posters are quite extreme (e.g a collapsed bridge or a dramatic shot of a desolate New York) it makes the character seem hardened and not fazed by much. This effect also highlights the endurance of mankind, that no matter how bad a situation gets, humans will adapt and becmoe hardened to it, this is a major theme throughout many films within the post apocalyptic genre.
Some more example of tyoe of film poster we would like to produce:

Filming Diary 3
On the thrid day of filming we went to the last offical location, Weybridge gravel pit. The scenes that we shot the scenes where the protagonist is beaten by the man whi he tries to assasinate and he is left in the industiral site to die, that is where the scene will end. The filming went well however the sun was too low and made some of the shots difficult as the flare on the lens, but we can use that shot as an establishing shot that might work well, even though it was not inteneded.
Things that went well:
-We got most of the shots we wanted to get
-The scene was as good as we had thought from the research we had done
Things that didn't go well:
The sun was too low which meant the shots we could get were limited as we could not shoot towards the sun
There were other people there

Filming Diary #2
On friday we did our second filming session, We went back to wisley airfield to finish off the shots that we didn't get last time, which didn't take too long as we got most of the shots that we needed last time, there were only a few shots that we needed to get that were missed and some shots that were added in later. The lighting and the time of day was the same as the last day of filming which means that we can use shots from different days in the same sequence. The shots we got are based around the same time as the other shots which means that we are finished completely with the scenic shots are can begin on the other shots, which are the shots before the war and the conflict that the main character gets himself into. Unlike the previous day, the wind was less prominent which means that the shots that we got will not need ADR which will help to take some of the time out of the editing process. As well as the shots at the airfield, we also got some shots in the surrounding field and area, which will help to give the chracter the impression of traveling though the country. The final location was at my house and we got some shots showing the surviour scavenging through the house, the shot ends with the main character having a gun put to his head from behind by the antagonist.
Things that went well:
We got all of the shots that we intened to do which means that the wisly airfield location is no longer needed
The challenges:
Nothing particularily prominent but it would have helped if we could have added the camp fire scene at Wisley, however we brought none of the material nececary for the main character to start a fire so we could not do it in Wisley. It is unlikely that we will return to Wisley as most of the shots we were intending to film have already been shot, therefore we may have to film this shot inanother location if at all.

Shot Planning
These shots will be mostly filmed at wisley and will include:

A camp fire shot:
This shot will be similar to the one above with the main character in their own next to the fire, this new shot will hopefully help to shows how wide spread the event was and how the character next to the fire is one of only a handful of people that survived. I also feel that this shot will help to keep the pace of the trailer slow at the beginning.

Car lock picking and looting:
This shot will show the main character picking the lock of a car that is abandoned to gain access to the supplies in the car, this is quite a generic shot and has been used in many action films but I think that it will work well in our film to show how desperate supplies are getting and that the characters have to resort to getting anything they can from wherever they can.
The last shot which I could not find a good image as an example for shows the main character reaching in their pocket and pulling out headphones, putting them on and listening to music which the audience will be able to hear. This will show the audience that not only has the event happened recently as the device still has battery, but it will also show that even after such a wide spread event, the characters still like to enjoy pre-apocalypse luxuries, this will also show how modern societies dependence on technology may hinder their survival.

Target Audience
We have decided to appeal our film to young adults, from 15- 30. There are many themes within our film which would be inappropriate for anyone under the age of 15, namely the excessive violence. This violence will be done in a shocking, but not deprived way, this combined with the fact that our film does not contain any other adult themes (such as drugs or sex) is why I believe 15 is a fair rating for our film. I also believe that 30 is most likely the oldest person who is likely to enjoy our film, as the majority of our plot centres around violence and action, older audiences may feel that it is slightly immature, however there is a dramatic element to our film so perhaps this effect may be counteracted. A film which is similar to ours is 28 days later, this is an 18 film, however this is solely due to the nature of the zombies (intended to be terrifying) as all of the violence will be perpertrated by evil people rather than inhuman mosters, it is much more hard hitting but at the same time a lot less scary, therefore much more suitable for younger audiences (such as 15 year olds)

Director's influences
Guy Ritchie
Guy ritchie is a British director popularised by the films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Sherlock Holmes and Snatch. He is well known for his gritty style of directing which is personified by his films, which are normally filled with brutal violence combined with dark comedy. This combination adds a rugged element to the story which particularly compliments his chosen actors (such as Vinnie Jones, Brad Pitt and Jason Statham) in a way that few other directors can match. We hope to adapt the light view of violence and gritty feel to our film, in order to give the film less of a serious feel to it, this will compliment the antagonist's insanity as he waves off violence as if it's nothing, it will also compliment the protagonist's ability to cope with a situation as he murders people without much regard. There are certain mistakes of Guy Ritchie we hope to avoid, most prominently we hope to keep the element of drama in our film, many of Guy Ritchie's films (most prominently Snatch) deviate from the original story through the crazy subplots, which are entertaining but take away from the drama of the film, this worked for Snatch however we don't want to replicate this type of erratic story structure.
Quentin Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino is an American director popularised by the films Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, Reservoir Dogs and many more. His films are well known for their copious amounts of violence and over the top blood and gore. Much of the dialogue within the film is over-zealous and dramatic, adding much emphasis and popularity to the characters (such as Jules from Pulp Fiction or Mr White from Reservoir Dogs) making them memorable characters from pop culture. We intend to replicate a certain amount from Quentin Tarantino, last year we modelled our piece primarily from Quentin Tarantino, it turned out well but this year we intend to do something different, the over grandeur doesn't particularly apply to our film genre as much as it did before. However we will use some techniques from Tarantino's films, our film will include copious amounts of violence, however we will get rid of the emphasis of it.

Planning Targets
You need to have evidence of your planning and include video blogging to evidence work you've done in your group towards your final production.
Character bios (Chris Robinson)
I will be the main antagonist in the film, having a relatively small part in it I will be the unstable psychopath which leads the main criminal faction within the wasteland. He will essentially be a sardonic mockery of a human being without any real sense of morals. At his side there will be many inferior thugs which can be used as pawns to him. he will wear clothes similar to many other criminals, bad, dirty jeans with a hoody/ T-shirt. All of them in a state of disrepair to give the character a sense of ruggedness.
The weapon will change depending on the situation, for example if he is performing an execution style shot to the back of the head then he will have a large, eye catching pistol (such as a revolver) whereas if he is in a fight he will use a compact sub machine gun or a similar, more readily available weapon. This variation will accentuate the unpredictability of the character. He will not really have a set objective, he will exist simply to hurt people for fun.

Character Bios (Will Squire)
Will is starring as the main character of our film, he will essentially be a normal person, with no special abilities or traits, perhaps a small amount of military training and a natural sense of intellect, but all of his abilities will be within the capabilities of most normal people. He will lead a small group of survivors which will essentially be the "good" faction of the film. His costume will consist of nothing special, basically just military surplus combined with casual clothes, practical but not so much so that he looks like a professional (such as a soldier or police officer) however it will be practical enough that he looks like he knows what he's doing.
His weapon will be a simple Colt .45 pistol, this is more for dramatic effect than anything else, it looks much better when everyone is fighting with rifles and shotguns while the main character chooses to use a big pistol, this has been shown in many different films and T.V shows (e.g The Walking Dead, Terminator) His main objective throughout the film will be something that the average person can relate to, such as searching for a member of family or a friend or simply just to survive.

Final Title Decision
We have decided on using "Her Majesty's Wasteland" as the title for our film, I have already given our reasons for using this title as well as the possible problems, however I will briefly reiterate
Reasons for using it as our title
-Very dramatic and grand sounding: it immediately catches the eyes of our potential audience.
-Describes a lot of the main themes of our film: for a title this gives a lot of information. It immediately reveals that it is a post apocalyptic film with the word "wasteland" it also gives a hint towards the British nature of our film, one of our main USP's.
- The combination of the former government (Her majesty's) and the implication of total destruction "wasteland" provides a nice contrast between law and order: This is somewhat of an ironic statement, having a dramatic, twisted effect to our film.
Problems with the title
Hints too heavily towards the British theme: this is a problem because, although one of our usp's is the nationality of our film , it is meant to be a subtle effect, as there will be no actual references to Britain, just British culture.
Long for a title: This is not a massive problem, however it is still an issue, as the title is longer, it does not roll off the tongue, this would hinder any word-of-mouth advertising for our film, it also makes the whole film seem slightly less attractive (however the grand nature of the title does make up for this)

Location Research (Weybridge gravel pit)
Weybridge is an abandoned old gravel pit, this site gives another source of desolate imagery to our film, similar to Wisley. Unlike Wisley, this site has an interior as well as a large structure around it, this means we could possibly have some action scenes, or at least possibly something more interesting than dramatic shots of Will. The site provides many different opportunities for our film, being an abandoned industrial shell of a building, it has a very strong post apocalyptic feeling around it and with the large monolithic structure, it adds a creepy for any number of scenes. We have many possible ideas for this location such as a large scavenging site for the main survivors, a site for a shoot out between the protagonists and the antagonists, the hide out for the main antagonists or simply just another scenic environment. What cannot be seen in these pictures are the surrounding gravel mounds that make up the majority of the location, these are relatively grim monolithic features to the landscape which adds an interesting, dramatic effect. We plan to possibly shoot the scene of Will being beaten up in the shadow of the gravel mounds.

Location Research (Wisley Airfield)
Wisley airfield is an old, abandoned airstrip just off of the A3. We have chosen it as a location primarily because of the overgrown and empty feeling around it, since it was abandoned, there has been no real upkeep of the site, therefore weeds grow through the tarmac and much of the old pavement is cracked and ruined. It has a very good post apocalyptic look due to it's state of abandonment and emptiness, however we don't intend to have many action scenes in this area because it is somewhat unrealistic to have more than one group or person, also the lack of any real hiding places restricts any element of surprise or suspense as any enemy would be easily seen. We may or may not choose to do some sort of sniper scene but for the time being we will keep this area simply for scenic atmosphere and dramatic shots of our main character

I believe all of these title sequences would be appropriate for our film, however my personal favourite is the first one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnhBfVSHWQ4) it has a very intriguing effect which would captivate anyone watching. It also relates to the theme of our film, as society has been destroyed, the black dust being wistfully blown away is good symbolism for this. However, we might change the speed in which the text appears and disappears, as the current speed seems to be leaning more towards an adventure film rather than a dramatic thriller. We will also make it moderately shorter, perhaps only one slide, as the sequence loses it's effect somewhat after a few seconds. We will probably use it in a similar way as in the video, with the same sort of start and ending however we may add some of our own aspects to the title sequence such as zooming slowly out of the paper until the sequence is finished. Or have the paper burn after all of the text has been shown, both of these would add dramatic effect to the sequence

Questionnaire results
How old are you?
This was generally answered with 15-19, which shows that many of the people who answered this questionaire were part of our target audience.
What film Genre do you generally like?
Action and horror were among the favourites here, this bodes well for us as our film is mainly an action.
How often do you generally watch films?
This was answered primarily with weekly/2-6 days this is a useful insight into the film habits of our target audience.
Have you ever seen a post apocalyptic film?
Many people said no however much less than what I expected, it shows that this kind of film is relatively recognisable
What is your view on the theme of post apocalypse?
Most people seemed to think the post apocalyptic theme was a good concept, which shows there is still much public interest over our type of film
What catches your eye in the trailer of a film?
The general trend for our answers was the effects, actors, amount of action and generally how the entire trailer catches the audience's eye. We will take this into account while making our trailer.
is there anything that may be in the trailer of a film that may deter you from watching the actual thing?
many people talked about corny acting, boring/generic scenes, cheesy effects and basically any indicator that the film is generic or dull. This is relatively useful as we have always been trying to aim to make our film one of a kind and interesting from the first look.

Filming Diary #1
Today we filmed a small amount of footage for the opening of our trailer at Wisley airfield. The conditions were relatively good, it was sunny and clear, meaning the lighting was sufficient, there was a small amount of wind however it was not a particularly large problem as we were able to simply position ourselves accordingly. We have not entirely decided around the structure of our Trailer, therefore we got a multitude of different shots to insure that we would have footage whichever direction we chose. The footage in question was exclusively of Will, the main protagonist, scavenging through a desolate wasteland. We hope to have a few more shots at Wisley when we have more of a structure to our story.
Things that went well:
We got some good scenery shot that will be placed at the start of the trailer.
The main character is introduced in the shots we obtained.
The location was a good as expected
The light level were perfect for filming
The challenges:
The wind levels on the day of filming were high, meaning that some of the audio in some of the shots is not suitable for use in the trailer
Time constraints meant that we did not get all of the shots that we wanted to get and means we will have to return to the same location to finish filming, however this is not a bad thing as we have come up with a few other shots that would be good at that location and will have to go back anyway to film those.

Storyboard

Shot 1: This shot will show an establishing shot of the main character in desolate area where everything has been destroyed (hopefully we will be able to use Wisley airfield for this) The camera will pan around the character and the shot will be a medium shot, the shot will then zoom out into a long shot. There will be no dialogue in this shot however there will be the ambient noise from the scene and some music playing
Shot 2: This shot will be for the title credits which show the producer and director of the film. The music will still be playing and the text will fade in and out.
Shot 3: This shot will show two characters talking before the event that the film is based around takes place. This will help to give the audience a better understanding of the background of the protagonist. The camera will do a shot reverse shot of a close up of the two characters and maybe a few over the shoulder shots mixed in.
Shot 4: This is another credits shot but this time it will show more institutional information rather than credits
Shot 5: These shots will be based after the event has happened. The main character will be looking for food and supplies and will be scavenging through houses and building. This sequence will have varied shot types that will include close up and extreme close up shots of the character as well as some of the props. Once again the music will be playing, but this shot will start a voice over monologue from the main character.
Shot 6: This shot will also show the character scavenging for supplies but this shot will focus on the character rather than the objects they are handling, Once again the music will be playing ad the monologue will continue
Shot 7: This shot will be the first encounter that the main character has with other survivors. The camera will swap between the characters focusing on their faces using shot reverse shot as well as over the shoulder shots. At this shot the monologue will subside and the diagetic sound will be the only audible sound apart from the music that is playing in the background.
Shot 8: This shot will be a plain black screen and the monologue will return for a few seconds, then the the next shot will be shown. The music starts to quieten down in this shot and fades to almost silent.
Shot 9: This will be a sequence of fight scenes that the main character has with other survivors. This sequence will be a series of fast cuts and the music will start again. The shot will mostly consist of close up shots and medium shots to help make the sequence faster.
Shot 10: This shot will be a follow on from the previous and will feature fast moving scenes with the music playing and some dialogue.
Shot 11: This shot will be a scene where the main character is meeting the other groups of survivors and the sequence will include some arguments with the other survivors and disputes between the main character and the other characters.

Planning Targets
Well done with your intitial ideas.
You need to add a few relevant pictures where you can and pie charts for your results. You need to interview two of your key actors and explain why they are suitable. You need to design some titles to create a brand identity. You need to evidence an intial storyboard. You need to evidence soundtrack research.
Do this for next Friday so some footage can be filmed over half-term.

Title research
We have discussed many different ideas for titles which coincide with the overall theme of our film, we have whittled our decisions into 3 final ideas:
Scorched Earth
This title originally stems from our initial idea to have England nuked rather than struck by chemical weaponry, however as we have drifted away from that idea we have also drifted away from this title. I feel this title is perhaps slightly tacky and does not quite roll off of the tongue.
Aftermath
Somewhat of a piggy back from "Scorched Earth" this title is perhaps slightly more catchy however is not a particularly interesting title, as aftermath is quite a broad word it does not really peak the audience's interest. However it does give more of an accurate insight into the film's story, as Scorched Earth could be considered a title for a war movie or thriller ect, the word aftermath is generally used to describe the events taking place after a disaster which is more suitable for our film.
Endgame
This is my personal favourite of all our titles, it is catchy and dramatic, therefore peaking the viewers interest and looking good on a poster. It is somewhat similar to "Aftermath" however much more powerful, implying that the events in the film are much more important because they are humanities last actions.
Her Majesty's Wasteland
This title has a very grand, powerful sound to it, it also rolls off the tongue in quite a pleasant sounding way. The title stems from our film's relation to British culture along with the apocalyptic nature of our film. This is my second favourite name for our film my only issues with it are that it puts too much emphasis on the british theme of our film (as that is not the main focal point for our film, just one of our usp's) and that it could possibly be too long (however this is not a massive issue)

Influences
Influence 1: The main influence to our film is 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle, we chose this film because of the simple ruggedness of it. The way the film uses the crude camera angles and the dark, simplistic lighting gives the film a more realistic, British feel to it. We intend to replicate this to a certain extent, some of the shots are slightly shaky and not pleasing to the eye so we don't intend to overdo the "rugged" feeling to the extent that it is confusing and unpleasant. It should also be noted that while our film is a post apocalyptic thriller, we will not be featuring any zombies or anything that is particularly unrealistic.

Influence 2: Another influence to our style of film is Mad Max, this does not have the same type of shots or overall look that we want, however it does have a similar theme to our film. A post apocalyptic wasteland with roaming gangs of psychopaths and one central highly competent protagonist. We will have certain things different to this film, for example we will have much less on screen violence, as well as a main character which does not display so much of the pseudo masculinity in which Mad Max does.

Film Brief
The premise for our film is a world war between Russia and the USA, Britain is caught in the middle of it and is struck with deadly chemical warheads which wipe out a large majority of the population. The story is centred around the protagonist, a normal man thrown into a destroyed world, looking for his brother in the ruins of destroyed society. Many of our possible locations are abandoned buildings and old quarry sites, to give the film a sense of desolation and emptiness. Apart from our main protagonist, we will have many other "filler" characters who play no big part but have some monetary presence and help the film gain a certain atmosphere by going through events in the middle of the film which the protagonist is cannot without ruining the story (such as death or serious injury).
In the opposite side we will have many faceless antagonists all behind one Central villain. Our main antagonist will be an unstable psychopath which will lead the gang of minor antagonist, he is taking advantage of the destruction to make his criminal faction powerful. He stops at nothing to achieve this goal and is not above killing his own men, all of this aided by the fact that he is certifiably insane. Apart from our main antagonist there will be many other criminals as his henchmen, these minor thugs help supplement the danger in which our main antagonist projects, these henchmen will be ultimately terrified by their leader and will visibly cower away from him, giving the main antagonist more power, this is also accentuated by the fact that all of the other criminals will be wearing cover for their faces, making them less significant and are basically just props for the main antagonist.
The story will centre around the protagonist group searching for supplies/family while trying to combat the dangers presented by the new world.

Make sure you are delegating planning responsibilities effectively from now on.
A really good start - well done!
Mood Board
1. Our film is following the theme of post apocalyptic action, the main characters being survivors of a cataclysmic earth shattering event. This is very similar to the TV series "Survivors" therefore our characters will all follow the same setting as ordinary people trying to cope with the new world order. As a result we will not have our characters particularly flashy with jewelry or hair cuts, they will be normal, run of the mill people with no spectacular features.
2. The setting for our film is a post apocalyptic wasteland, a shell of the modern world. Features such as old, abandoned buildings and featureless spots of landscape will be the primary locations to our film. This setting is obviously very common within our chosen film type as many people would associate the apocalypse with nuclear winter.
3. Our film is set in England, where weapons are heavily controlled by the government. As a result of these regulations, the weapons in our film will be primarily be centred around melee weapons fashioned or found from around the house items such as cricket bats, baseball bats, hatchets and crowbars. This is somewhat typical for many British films, the lack of any actual military weaponry adds a gritty realism to the film.
4. The costume for our main character will be that of a prepared, competent survivor. While the rest of the characters will be wearing normal, possibly tattered clothing, our main character will be wearing military surplus clothing, outfitted with practical shoes and other accessories. he will be armed to the teeth with all of the sort of weapons a survivor could find. This type of strong, ridiculously over the top survivor can be seen in many post apocalyptic films (such as Mad Max, The Book of Eli, Zombieland ect)
5. We haven't entirely decided what or main antagonist/s will be, whether it will be a lone psychopath or a group of thugs, however we have decided that they will follow a similar appearance to the typical looter that plagues any disaster, with the typical criminal attair of hoody and a balaclava/ scarf. This will shroud the identity of the antagonists, making them covered in mystery, while at the same time making them a lesser part of the film. On the other hand, if we wish the antagonist to have more of an impact on the audience, to play a bigger part in the overall film, we might give him more of a personality. with an uncovered face, suitably armed with brutal looking weapons and a cold, detached, psycopathic smile (such as Toecutter from Mad Max or Alex from The Clockwork Orange)
6. These are the sort of guns we plan to use in our film (specifically the shotgun, pistol and possibly the Mac-10) these guns are all relatively low tech, this is because it is very unlikely that a group of ordinary people would be able to get high tech weapons. Guns such as these would be uncommon in England but not unheard of. Shotguns and hunting rifles can be found in certain farmers houses, illegal weapons such as the pistols/Mac-10 could possibly found in a drug dealer or gangster's house. The guns must have very little appearance and cannot be shown in the hands of everyone, perhaps 1 hunting rifle in the hands of the protaginist, possibly another one in the hands of another capable "good" survivor and around half of the antagonists should have guns such as pistols or micro sub machine guns.
